چکیده
Accurate global measurments of tropospheric CO2 abundance to the "parts per million" (ppm) level is required to better quantify processes that regulate CO2 exchange between atmosphere, land and ocean. To this end NASA has planned the ASCENDS mission, Active Sensing of CO2 Emissions over Nights, Days and Seasons. We report on an airborne laser-based remote sensing instrument we have developed at NASA-GSFC and flight tested to 13 km altitude which is a viable candidate for the ACENDS mission.

Pulsed airborne lidar measurements of atmospheric optical depth using the Oxygen A-band at 765 nm.
We report on an airborne demonstration of atmospheric oxygen optical depth measurements with an IPDA lidar using a fiber-based laser system and a photon counting detector. Accurate knowledge of atmospheric temperature and pressure is required for NASA's Active Sensing of CO2 Emissions over Nights, Days, and Seasons (ASCENDS) space mission, and climate modeling studies. The lidar uses a doubled ...
متن کاملAirborne Measurements of CO2 Column Concentration and Range Using a Pulsed Direct-Detection IPDA Lidar
We have previously demonstrated a pulsed direct detection IPDA lidar to measure range and the column concentration of atmospheric CO2. The lidar measures the atmospheric backscatter profiles and samples the shape of the 1,572.33 nm CO2 absorption line. We participated in the ASCENDS science flights on the NASA DC-8 aircraft during August 2011 and report here lidar measurements made on four flig...
متن کاملAirborne measurements of CO2 column absorption and range using a pulsed direct-detection integrated path differential absorption lidar.
We report on airborne CO(2) column absorption measurements made in 2009 with a pulsed direct-detection lidar operating at 1572.33 nm and utilizing the integrated path differential absorption technique. We demonstrated these at different altitudes from an aircraft in July and August in flights over four locations in the central and eastern United States. The results show clear CO(2) line shape a...
متن کاملAnalysis of Range Measurements From a Pulsed Airborne CO2 Integrated Path Differential Absorption Lidar
Determining the CO2 column abundance from an integrated path differential absorption (IPDA) lidar requires accurate knowledge of the range to the scattering surface, i.e., the column height. We have adapted and tested a ranging algorithm for the airborne IPDA CO2 lidar designed at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, and have evaluated its accuracy and precision. We applied a quasi-maximum-lik...
متن کاملA Lidar Approach to Measure CO2 Concentrations from Space for the ASCENDS Mission
We report on a lidar approach to measure atmospheric CO2 column concentration being developed as a candidate for NASA’s ASCENDS mission. It uses a pulsed dual-wavelength lidar measurement based on the integrated path differential absorption (IPDA) technique. We demonstrated the approach using the CO2 measurement from aircraft in July and August 2009 over various locations. The results show clea...
